What Are The Benefits of Vaping vs Smoking

Vaping has emerged as a prevalent and popular alternative to smoking in recent years, with the process seeing people inhale flavoured vapour from an e-liquid vaporiser.

The process results in a thick, often white, cloud of vapour being emitted and is often characterised by a sweet smelling aroma. Vaping is said to have been invented by Chinese pharmacist Hon Lik, who decided to try and find an alternative to smoking after his father died of cancer.

Since its introduction, a debate has raged in the smoking community as to whether this new method for getting your nicotine fix really is a better solution than older methods.

Today we’re going to look at four key reasons why this growing movement is the superior option in the battle of vaping vs smoking.

1. Far Fewer Health Risks

Let’s kick-off our list with a look at the key debate in this argument: the health benefits that come from vaping ahead of smoking.

It’s been well documented over the years just how harmful smoking a regular cigarette can be, with the inclusion of tobacco now a proven primary cause in most types of cancer.

Aside from tobacco, which can lead to the big C-word, inhaling regular cigarette smoke means you’re taking in:

  • Methyl Ethyl Ketone – depresses the central nervous system
  • Catechol – causes respiratory tract irritation and dermatitis
  • Carbon Monoxide – decreases heart and muscle function
  • Polonium – a radioactive substance which has the same effect on the body as receiving an x-ray does

These are quite literally just a handful of the 36 different chemicals you’re likely to find in a cigarette. When contrasted to the chemicals found in e-cig vapours, there really isn’t much comparison. A regular vaping e-liquid is likely to consist of just:

  • Nicotine
  • Propylene glycol – a substance used in asthma pumps
  • Vegetable glycerol – found in food items
  • Minor chemicals found in the vapour flavourings – all of which are good grade and recognised as safe

E-cigarettes and vaporisers have only been around for a few years, making it difficult to state their long-term benefits. However, the starkly different use of chemicals between them and a regular cigarette highlights far fewer actual risks.

Smoking has been unequivocally proven to cause harm, and with the grocery-list-sized pile of chemicals they contain, that’s hardly a surprise.

Sticking to vaping means you’re taking a safer approach when it comes to your general health, with those aforementioned minor chemicals incredibly unlikely to cause you any serious harm.

2. The Taste

Even stalwart smokers will be the first to admit the taste of a cigarette is in and of itself not a very pleasant one.

While some people will now intrinsically link it to the relief they associate with smoking, there are very few people who pick one up for the first time and instantly enjoy the sensation.

The complete opposite can be said of vapour, with hundreds of companies pumping out a huge number of amazing flavours for consumers to choose from.

Some of the most popular flavours on the market include:

  • Raspberry
  • Milkshake
  • Rhubarb & Custard
  • Caramel
  • Chocolate

There literally isn’t enough room here to list every flavour available to die-hard vapers – or even every company that produce them. While there are subtle differences between ‘flavours’ in cigarettes, they simply can’t compare to the juxtaposition of something like blueberry and mango you get when selecting vapour flavours.

The ability to customise and hand-pick your favourite flavours has handed vaporisers a massive advantage in the battle of vaping vs smoking. We don’t care what anyone says; you wouldn’t actively choose to smoke tar-flavour ahead of fresh strawberries.

3. ‘Politer’ Public Image

This might sound like an odd one, but vaping does have something of a slightly more positive public image when it comes to the wider community – that’s assuming you show people respect and don’t break vaping-etiquette.

There’s no odour or residue when you vape correctly, with aerosol droplets depositing in the lungs and not travelling back up and out your nostrils or mouth. While you might be accustomed to seeing people emitting large plumes of smoke when vaping, this is in reality considered something of a faux pas.

Small emittance of smoke is always going to happen, but try to make sure this is as minimal as possible – which can easily be achieved if you:

  • Prioritise taking a drag ahead of blowing the largest smoke clouds you can
  • Aim your exhales down towards the ground to reduce the risk of blowing back into someone’s face
  • Try to vape in an area where less people are located. It’s impossible to find somewhere that’s completely deserted, but the less people the better

More often than not people will, if anything, be pleasantly surprised by the smell of vapour, as opposed to the common complaint you’ll hear from non-smokers over the smell that comes as a by-product of regular cigarette usage.

We spoke about health earlier – and it’s again apt to note at this point there will also be far less risk with second-hand vaping clouds, than there might be via more old-school methods of smoking.

4. The Community

A key asset that has made vaping the global phenomenon it is today, comes in the form of the community that has risen up around the trend.

Whereas smoking has long moved on from a communal activity and become more of a five-minute excuse to get out of work, vaping clubs are an ever-growing society which are developing their very own culture.

VapeBlast is a national competition which pits the best vapers from across the country together in an amicable head-to-head battle, which sees them attempting to outdo one and other by blowing out the best vapour clouds – based on style and size.

Modding devices have also added a completely new dimension to the whole affair, with people able to customise their vaporisers with a whole range of intricate designs and features.

Whereas smokers might feel they have something of a connection with the other people who they spend their five-minute breaks with, it’s nothing when compared to the structured and continuously growing community that vapers have forged over the past few years.

Ultimately, the battle of vaping vs smoking is becoming increasingly weighted towards the former, and, with all the benefits laid out in this list to support vaping, it feels like it could only be a matter of time before it becomes the more popular medium for people craving their nicotine-fix.

While this is certainly a debate that will not find its conclusion here and now, it’s becoming harder to detract from the argument that vaping is a friendlier and tastier alternative to smoking cigarettes.
